From beginning…
to end…
This portrait commission was so much fun! Cheryl is a longtime friend (we were on Livejournal together!) so I feel like I know her pretty well. Painting a portrait of someone you are friends with is totally different than someone new–I had a picture of the piece in my mind well before I even picked up a pencil to start.
Cheryl left most of the content up to me, but did mention that she was a Japanese and all things cute fanatic. Well, of course, that might be part of why we’re friends! I had to resist putting Hello Kitty peeping over her shoulder and opted for floating sushi and paper lanterns instead.
Want a portrait like Cheryl’s? Check out my revised portrait packages here. The holiday season is just around the corner, and I’m only taking a limited number of orders, so gogogo get your email on. xoxo

This is so well layered, balanced, and overall adorable. One of my favorite commissions of yours yet!

Livejournal represent!! I just met a friend in real life recently who was an LJ friend about 5 years ago, but we never met in person before. I find that it’s hard to explain to folks these days what LJ was like; the oddly intimate online relationships that you’re able to forge when you’re sharing longform discussions about your inner and outer life with a locked down group of maybe 20 people. It was a moment in time, for sure.
Anyway, I’m going to become a broken record with my comments on your work, but I really love how much dynamism you capture with these portraits. There’s a feeling of movement — I get the vibe from Cheryl right away.
