Today I face one of my most intense decisions since moving to L.A.: do I brave The Grove on my bike, or drive over and have to deal with validation? I figured I’d put off that nutty little adventure in favor of sharing something so sweet, it might just send you to the dentist. When I say sweet, I’m not kidding. Through my limited studies of Barbra during this project, I realized that I had developed my own version of her in my rad noggin. The type of image that has her swaying around in black and white caftans, and lounging next to reproductions of the statue of David. White, of course. She’d drink white wine and laugh coyly at how pedestrian my own ideas were about home design (namely PINK! And flowers. And hot cocoa and popcorn.) My friend, Lindsey, a hard core Barbra fan, schooled me the other night (you’ll be hearing about our Barbra date soon. Ye-ow!). We sat hunkered over the computer, and I gasped at what I saw. Are you ready?? Barbra’s home! from Harper’s Bazaar Ok, so, Babs is totally lounging. But what I want you to focus in on is her dolls! They […]
It’s probably no surprise, but I had never seen a Barbra Streisand movie! When I decided to do my 30 Days of Barbra Project, my knee-jerk reaction was to comb Netflix and see what I could find.Their instant feature didn’t let me down– “Funny Girl” was right there waiting. Since I had read her Wikipedia article (hey, you gotta start somewhere), I already had a mini- background on “Funny Girl”. I knew that it was Streisand’s first feature film, and released in 1968 (this sort of shocked me. I know that 1968 is DECADES ago, but I’ve had crushes on dudes who were born the year after. So I had to deduce that this was gonna be a hip movie). “Funny Girl” is the loose biography of actress Fanny Brice. She’s small-town, looking for bigger things, and banking on her immeasurable talent. Who doesn’t love that? Fanny is a firecracker (check the clip below!) and aware of how she looks and moves–she mentions over and over that she knows she isn’t “pretty” (just a sidenote–this sort of grated on me. Streisand has a unique look, but you’d be a troll not to realize her beauty in this movie. Girlfriend is […]
A few weeks ago, Ben and I received a message from our dear friend Chuck. He told us that Record Surplus, a store in Santa Monica, was moving soon, and was having an epic sale. He said he’d pick us up, and we headed over. Well, “epic” is no exaggeration. The top half of Record Surplus was priced 10 records for a buck. I went in with no expectations, and left with my hands full. The box I put in the back of Chuck’s car contained thirteen (!) Barbra Streisand records. I couldn’t resist the price, and the chance at a collection. You see, I’m not, what they might call, a Barbra fan. Sure, I recognize her voice, recognize her face, and recognize when someone’s doing a sketch comedy impression of her. But do I know her? No way.I’m convinced Record Surplus’ sale was a call to me, and now it’s my turn to respond. Here we go, friends, it’s:30 Days of Barbra! Here’s the deal: I wanna get knee deep in Barbra. I wanna study her, feel her soul, really get to know what all the fuss is about. And I want to share my adventure with you!”30 Days of […]
